James Wan was born on 26 February 1977 in Kuching, Sarawak, Malaysia, to Chinese-Malaysian parents. He moved to Perth, Western Australia at age seven, attended West Leederville Primary School, Willetton Senior High School, and Lake Tuggeranong College, then relocated to Melbourne to study at RMIT, graduating with a Bachelor of Arts in media in 1999. Prior to 2003, Wan and friend Leigh Whannell wrote a horror script inspired by their dreams and fears, which became Saw. They shot a low-budget excerpt to pitch to studios, with Whannell starring as Adam Stanheight. The full-length Saw (2004) grossed over US$103 million worldwide, leading to a franchise that became the highest-grossing horror franchise globally in unadjusted dollars. Wan directed Saw and co-wrote Saw III (2006), and served as executive producer on subsequent sequels.
